Sheffield CitySheffield City is located in the centre of England and is about 160 miles north of the capital London. The City has two Universities, both of which have excellent engineering departments having good reputations for research and development in Radio related technology.
Sheffield Amateur Radio ClubSheffield Amateur Radio Club has for many years, provided a meeting place and training facility for those interested in Amateur Radio and Short Wave Listening. The Radio Club meets most Mondays. We meet at the Sheffield Transport Sports Club, near the Meadowhead roundabout, in the south of the City. The Radio Club has been active in the life of the City for many years - both promoting Amateur Radio and providing training for those who wish to take up the hobby. The Club holds the callsign G3RCM (reissued to the club in 2003) which is used for club-night operation. The club is also affiliated to the RSGB. Saturday 19th July - the first "Sheffield Hamfun Day"Sheffield Amateur Radio Club is hosting Sheffield's first Hamfun Day, on Saturday the 19th July 2008. This event will be held at the Club's QTH which is at the Sheffield Transport Club Greenhill Main Road, Sheffield.S8 7RH. This will be a relatively small event to start, with only a few major traders such as LAM, in attendance. In addition we intend to have a bring and buy stand, and a flea market/ car boot sale. There will be fun for all the family at this event throughout the day with various stalls. Including bouncy castle, dancing, jazz/ brass band, children's entertainment and a local retro band. Food and beverage facilities available including bar. Prize draw with proceeds to The Gambian Schools Trust. Easy to get to and ample parking; doors open at 11:00 entrance fee £1 per person and £2 car parking per car. Disabled parking and access available. Talk in on 145.550/434.550Mhz, G3RCM. New D-Star Repeater - GB7SFNew for 2008 - Steve M1ERS and a team of Sheffield radio amateurs have set up a D-STAR repeater system here in Sheffield. This is one of the first D-Star systems in the UK. D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio) is a digital voice and data protocol specification developed for use in amateur radio. D-Star compatible radios are available on VHF and UHF amateur radio bands. In addition to the over-the-air protocol, D-Star also provides specifications for network connectivity, enabling D-Star radios to be connected to the Internet or other networks. D-STAR is the result of research by the Japan Amateur Radio League to investigate digital technologies for amateur radio. To date, other than ICOM - no other amateur radio equipment manufacturer has chosen to include D-Star technology. More details are available on our special interest page.
RSGB SSB Field Day - 2007 - Result 6th Place in Open SectionThis was our fifth SSB Field Day operation after many years without competing and is a great result for the club. Last year we were 2nd in the Open Section, with 18 Clubs entering this category. This year we have come 6th with 21 Clubs in the category. We operated for the second time from the club venue at the Sheffield Transport Sports Club, at the Meadowhead roundabout near Sheffield. We used an FT1000MP with a Linear Amplifier. Aerials were a 3 element yagi at 10 metres for 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m, and

IOTA Dxpedition to Arran - 2007At the end of July 2007, a team from Sheffield ARC took part in the IOTA contest from the Scottish Island of Arran, IOTA reference EU-123. The team also competed in the IOTA contest in 2005 and 2006.

Awards for AllThe Club has been successful in a second application to 'Awards for All', which is a Lottery grants programme aimed at local communities. We have been given to £4,900 to spend over one year on equipment and activities to:
The money will help us obtain constructional items for projects, training and promotional materials and room hire for workshops. Members ideas and their involvement in the projects is encouraged. A copy of our 'Awards for All' application may be downloaded from our links page.
