About us

What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur Radio is a unique and fascinating hobby that captivates the interest of millions of people around the world.

It encompasses a huge range of activities, including communication with other enthusiasts in the local area, building and maintenance of radio equipment, using amateur satellites to relay messages over huge distances, and using short-wave radio to communicate worldwide, often with no more transmitted power than that of a domestic light bulb.

Many Radio Amateurs are operating at the cutting edge of technology and some have been responsible for the communications developments that we now all take for granted.

Amateur radio can be enjoyed by people of all ages, all of whom can make friends around the world, from their own home.

What do Radio Amateurs Do?

  • Through radio we talk to like-minded people around the world
  • We like to experiment with radio
  • Some of us like to build equipment
  • Some of us talk to the International Space Station or use amateur satellites
  • Amateurs even transmit television pictures
  • We participate in competitions
  • We go on ‘Dxpeditions’
  • We push the Frontiers of Technology

Sheffield Amateur Radio Club

The Radio Club meets most Mondays at the SYPTE Social Club, Meadowhead, Sheffield 8.

The Radio Club has around fifty members. The club been active in the life of the City for many years - both promoting Amateur Radio and providing training for those who wish to take up the hobby.

Club Callsigns

The Club holds the callsign G3RCM (reissued to the club in 2003) which is used for regular operation from the club premises.

The club also holds the contest call M3M and the callsign of founder member Howard Booth G2AS. These callsigns are used for club contest activities.

Club members are encouraged to use club callsigns for appropriate events and contests that promote Sheffield Amateur Radio Club away from club premises. This can be arranged by discussing this with the club chairperson and the NOV holder, to ensure that the callsign is available for the proposed activity. All logs are to be sent to the club QSL manager (in ADIF format) as we consider it very important that we are able to reply to QSL card requests from other radio amateurs.

What Goes On?

An HF or VHF transmitting station is established regularly on Club nights.

The club is also affiliated to the RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) and club events are advertised in the RSGB monthly journal 'Radcom' and on the RSGB website.

The radio club members participate in a variety of aspects of the hobby and are able to help others to join in these activities, for example:

  • Internet linking to Amateur Radio
  • Microwave construction and experimentation
  • VHF and HF Contesting
  • Portable and Field Day operation
  • Special Event Stations
  • Direction Finding
  • HF DX Operation
